Service Learning 2 ( December 2021, During the site visit)

On December 11, 2021 (Saturday), we started our site visit at Monanie Family Enterprise, Bintulu, Sarawak. On this day, we went there at 2 p.m. (follow the time in the interview request letter). After we reached there, the owner, which is Madam Razuna, asked us to introduce ourselves first. After the self-introduction session, Madam Razuna started to briefly introduce the background of the company. As Madam Razuna said, Monanie Family Enterprise was established in 2002, when the operation was limited to making and selling the traditional breakfast at that time. After that, she realised that there were so many competitors around, so she changed to selling fisheries products. Later, she successfully exported her products to Singapore, and her products were really famous there.

After that, we started to ask her questions. Regarding the name of the company, which is Moannie Family Enterprise, the word "Monanie" is a combination of Puan Razuna’s and her husband’s name, Ghani. The word "family" is used because this is their family business. She didn't raise any shrimp; the shrimp were bought from a supplier. The supplier is someone that Puan Razuna knows; thus, it is easy for her to buy the shrimp while it is still fresh from the sea. The freshly bought shrimp are then immediately processed into shrimp paste to ensure quality. The making process of shrimp paste (belacan) is quite long, normally 3 to 5 days, depending on the weather. Madam Razuna normally wears the headcover and gloves when she makes shrimp paste to make sure hygiene practises are followed. When we asked about how COVID-19 affected her business, Madam Razuna told us that getting RM100 for one day was very difficult due to the economic decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In one day, Puan Razuna only gets RM20-RM30, so she has to continue promoting her products using the same method for the next few days. Foodpanda also did not yet exist at that time, so Puan Razuna delivered her products to her customers who lived far from her through her two runners.

After all the interview questions have been asked, my groupmates and I are interested in buying the products from Moanie Family Enterprise to support Madam Razuna. After we bought the products, we asked the daughter of Madam Razuna, which is Miss Nur Atifah, to help us take a group photo with Madam Razuna and our groupmates. Finally, we're ready to go home.
